Covered California is where Californians can shop for and compare quality health plans among a variety of brand-name insurance companies.
Based on your annual household income, you may qualify for what’s called an Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC) to help reduce your monthly premiums. Or you may qualify for low or no-cost coverage through Medi-Cal.
Open enrollment for health coverage is at the end of every year, but you may be eligible for special enrollment if you experience a qualifying life event. Medi-Cal enrollment is year-round.
There are 4 basic types of qualifying life events. (The following are examples, not a full list.)
Loss of health coverage
Losing existing health coverage, including job-based, individual, and student plans
Losing eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, or CHIP
Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan
Changes in household
Getting married or divorced
Having a baby or adopting a child
Death in the family
Changes in residence
Moving to a different ZIP code or county
A student moving to or from the place they attend school
A seasonal worker moving to or from the place they both live and work
Moving to or from a shelter or other transitional housing
Other qualifying events
Changes in your income that affect the coverage you qualify for
Gaining membership in a federally recognized tribe or status as an Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation shareholder
Becoming a U.S. citizen
Leaving incarceration (jail or prison)
AmeriCorps members starting or ending their service
You and your family may be eligible for some important preventive services at no additional cost to you.
If your plan is subject to the new requirements, you may not have to pay a copayment, co-insurance, or deductible to receive recommended preventive health services, such as screenings, vaccinations, and counseling.
For example, depending on your age, you may have access — at no cost — to preventive services such as:
- Blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol tests
- Many cancer screenings, including mammograms and colonoscopies
- Counseling on such topics as quitting smoking, losing weight, eating healthfully, treating depression, and reducing alcohol use
-Regular well-baby and well-child visits, from birth to age 21
- Routine vaccinations against diseases such as measles, polio, or meningitis
- Counseling, screening, and vaccines to ensure healthy pregnancies
